Old Soldiers Never Die

Mr. President, Mr.Speaker and distinguished Members of the Congress:

대통령 각하, 의장님, 그리고 고명하신 의원 여러분

I stand on this rostrum with a sense of deep humility and great pride-humility in the

wake of those great American architects of our history who have stood here before

me, pride in the reflection that this forum of legislative debate represents human

liberty in the purest form yet devised.

저는 깊은 겸양과 자부심을 가지고-즉 저보다 먼저 이 자리에 섰던 위대한 미국 역사의 건설

자들의 궤적을 따르고자 하는 겸양과, 이 입법부의 토론장(국회의사당)이 지금까지 고안된

가장 순순한 형태로 인간의 자유를 대표한다고 생각하는 자부심을 가지고 이 연단에 섰습니

다.

Here are centered the hopes and aspirations and faith of the entire human race.

여기에 전 인류의 희망과 열망과 신념이 집중되어 있습니다.

I do not stand here as advocate for any partisan cause, for the issues are

fundamental and reach quite beyond the realm of partisan consideration. They must

be resolved on the highest plane of national interest if our course is to prove sound

and our future protected.

저는 어떤 당파적인 명붑을 옹호하고자 이 자리에 선 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 논점들이 근

본적이며 당파적 이해 관계의 영역을 완전히 넘어선 것들이기 때문입니다. 최상의 국가 이익

이라는 측면에서 그 논점들은 만약 우리의 진로가 옳고 우리의 미래가 보호되고 있음을 입증

하고자 한다면 해결되어야 합니다.

I trust, therefore, that you will do me the justice of receiving that which I have to say

as solely expressing the considered viewpoint of a fellow American.

그러므로 저는 제가 단지 동료 미국인의 신중한 의사를 표현하는 것과 같이 말씀드려야 할

바를 받아들여 주심으로써 저를 정당하게 대우해 주시리라 믿습니다.

I address you with neither rancor nor bitterness in the fading twilight of life, but with

but one purpose in mind: to serve my country....

저는 저물어 가는 인생의 황혼기에 어떤 적의나 비통함에서가 아니라 단지 마음에 품은 한

가지 목적 곧 내 조국을 섬기고자 하는 의도에서 여러분께 말씀드립니다.

While I was not consulted prior to the President's decision to intervene in support of

the Republic of Korea, that decision, from a military standpoint, proved a sound one.

As I say, it proved a sound one, as we hurled back the invader and decimated his

forces. Our victory was complete, and our objectives within reach, when Red China

intervened with numerically superior ground forces.

대통령께서 대한민국에 대한 지원에 개입하려는 결정을 하기에 앞서 저와 상의하지는 않으

셨지만, 그 결정은 군사적인 관점에서 보건대 올바른 것으로 입증되었습니다. 말씀드리는 바

와 같이 그 결정은 우리가 침략자를 격퇴시키고 그들의 군사력을 격감시킴으로써 올바른 것

으로 판명되었습니다. 우리의 승리는 완벽했으며 우리의 목적은 손이 닿을 수 있는 곳에 있

었습니다. 그때 중공군이 수적으로 우세한 지상군을 동원하여 개입했던 것입니다.
 

This created a new war and an entirely new situation, a situation not contemplated

when our forces were committed against the North Korean invaders; a situation

which called for new decisions in the diplomatic sphere to permit the realistic

adjustment of military strategy. Such decisions have not been forthcoming.

이것은 새로운 전쟁과 전혀 새로운 상황을 야기시켰습니다. 이 상황은 우리 군이 북한 침략

자들에 맞서 배치되었을 당시에는 생각지도 못했던 것이었습니다. 이 상황은 외교 분야에서

While no man in his right mind would advocate sending our ground forces into

continental China, and such was never given a thought, the new situation did

urgently demand a drastic revision of strategic planning if our political aim was to

defeat this new enemy as we had defeated the old.

누구도 제 정신으로는 우리 지상군을 중국 대륙에 보내는 것을 찬성하지 않을 것이고, 이런

일은 생각조차 해 보지 않았지만, 만약 우리의 정치적 목적이 처음의 적을 물리쳤듯이 이 새

로운 적도 물리치는 것이었다면 이 새로운 상황은 전략을 과감하게 수정할 것을 긴급하게 요

구했습니다.

The tragedy of Korea is further heightened by the fact that as military action is

confined to its territorial limits, if condemns that nation, which it is our purpose to

save, to suffer the devastating impact of full naval and air bombardment while the

enemy's sanctuaries are fully protected from such attack and devastation.

한국의 비극은 군사적인 행동이 그 영토 한계 안으로만 제한되어 있어 우리가 구해 내려는

그 나라가 전면적인 해상 폭격과 공습의 파괴적인 영향으로 고통을 받게 되어 있고 반면에

적의 은신처는 그런 공격과 참화로부터 전적으로 보호를 받고 있다는 사실에 의해 더욱 고조

되고 있습니다.

Of the nations of the world Korea alone, up to now, is the sole one which has risked

its all against communism. The magnificence of the courage and fortitude of the

Korean people defies description. They have chosen to risk death rather than

slavery. Their last words to me were:

세계의 여러 나라들 중 한국만이 지금까지 공산주의에 대항하여 모든 것을 건 유일한 나라였

습니다. 한국인의 훌륭한 용기와 불굴의 정신은 필설로는 표현할 수가 없을 정도입니다. 그

들은 노예가 되는니 차라리 죽음을 무릅쓰기로 했습니다. 그들이 저에게 했던 마지막 말은

이것이었습니다.

"Don't scuttle the Pacific." "태평양을 포기하지 마십시오"
 
I have just left your fighting sons in Korea. They have met all tests there, and I can

report to you without reservation that they are splendid in every way.

저는 한국에서 싸우고 있는 여러분의 아들들을 막 떠나 왔습니다. 그들은 그 곳에서 온갖 시

련을 감당했으며 저는 그들이 모든 면에서 참 훌륭하다고 기탄 없이 여러분께 말씀 드릴 수

있습니다.

It was my constant effort to preserve them and end this savage conflict honorably

and with the least loss of time and a minimum sacrifice of life. Its growing bloodshed

has caused me the deepest anguish and anxiety. Those gallant men will remain

often in my thoughts and in my prayers always.

저는 그들을 보호하고 이 야만적인 전쟁을 최소한의 시간 손실과 인명피해만으로 명예롭게

끝내고자 끊임없이 노력했습니다. 늘어가는 유혈사태는 저에게 더없이 깊은 고통과 불안을

안겨 주었습니다. 그 용맹스런 병사들은 제 생각과 기도 속에 항상 머물러 있을 것입니다.
 

I am closing my fifty-two years of military service. When I joined the Army, even

before the turn of the century, it was the fulfillment of all my boyish hopes and

dreams.

저는 52년간의 군복무를 끝마치려 하고 있습니다. 세기가 바뀌기 직전에 제가 군에 입대했을

때, 그것은 소년시절의 제 모든 희망과 꿈의 실현이었습니다.
 

The world has turned over many times since I took the oath on the plain at West

Point, and the hopes and dreams have long since vanished, but I still remember the

refrain of one of the most popular barack ballads of that day which proclaimed most

proudly that old soldiers never die; they just fade away.

제가 웨스트포인트의 평원에서 선서한 이래 세상은 여러번 바뀌었고, 희망과 꿈이 사라진 지

오래입니다만 저는 아직도 '노병은 결코 죽지 않는다; 다만 사라져 갈 뿐이다'라고 자신 있게

선포했던 그 당시 병영 최고의 애창곡들 가운데 한 곡의 후렴구를 기억합니다.

And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade

away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that

duty. Good-bye.

그리고 그 노래의 노병처럼, 저는 이제 군인으로서의 이력을 마감하고 하나님께서 그에게 그

임무를 알 수 있는 능력을 주셨기에 자신의 소임을 다하고자 했던 한사람의 노병으로서 다만

사라져 갑니다. 안녕히 계십시오.
